Canopy

I love working with start up companies. There is a great vibe that goes along with entrepreneurs. I recently worked with a new ad agency, Fellow, and their startup client Canopy. Canopy has developed iPhone App's and hardware. The App adds functions to the iPhone's still and video cameras. Their sleeves have fittings on it so it can be mounted to a standard tripod head. Another sleeve plugs into the iPhone and adds buttons to the top of your iPhone. I formally traveled with a good point and shoot as well as my pro gear. Not anymore. The quality is amazing. This picture shows one of my setups. I screw a small tripod head to the Canopy sleeve, then attached the head to a stud with a clamp. I then clamped the rig to a bolt sticking out from a old light house foundation. The driving shots were accomplished by attaching this same rig to the grill of a Jeep.

Frost 180-Finished!

Is a studio space ever finished? We still need some signs up. A year of planning, design, construction, countless trips to the dumpster and getting to know the workers at the recycling center by name, Frost 180 is finished! It will serve as a full service production facility for myself, Rod Komis and others.

Runway 32R KMIC (Crystal Airport)

Flyby at the Crystal Airport. I am reminded of the original Airport movie. It was filmed at the MSP

airport in 1970. It was quite the talk of the town at the time. Check out 24 seconds into this clip. It kind of looks like the same rig.

Regular MSP passengers will notice the ticket booths to the right of the terminal in the intro sequence. None of those airlines serviced MSP at that time. Those booths were constructed for the movie.

Molokai

Molokai is a rugged beauty. I’ve been asked by even some Hawaiians, why I bother going there. It is a Hawaii that most people will never see. You won’t find drinks served on the beach with umbrellas in them or much of souvenir trade. What you will find is a rugged beauty and a simpler life, with people rooted in their culture.

One popular local phrase is: “Don’t change Molokai, let it change you”

Nature Conservancy: Mo`omomi and Kamakou Preserves

The Nature Conservancy has 2 preserves on the Island of Molokai. It takes some work to get to either of them but it is well worth it. Mo`omomi is the location of an endangered sand dune beach and the Kamakou preserve is a rainforest with many endangered species. Both hikes were spectacular.

Leaving The Ford Centre

When I signed a lease in the Ford Centre in 1987 I thought that I would be there for 5 years. 23 years later, changing downtown Minneapolis economics have brought a move to the Frost Building in Northeast Minneapolis. I'm a very fortunate person to leave this space with many memories of working with great clients and crews. Goodbye slow elevators. Frost 180 is on ground level!

The Last Supper

New Book: Fabric Remix

Over the past year I have been working with writer/designer Sandy Stone on her new book Fabric Remix. It is finally published! Sandy uses vintage and unique items to produce beautiful one of a kind pillows, furniture, clothes, and well everything.

Working with her and stylist Lisa Evidon in Sandy’s studio and on location was a great experience.

Minnesota Twins Opener

Rather then fighting the crowds on opening day, we thought we'd join them. Note the Media Center that we set up. We had the game live, and tapes running from the 1987 and 1965 World Series, in age appropriate devices.

Kalaupapa

Kalaupapa is a remote peninsula off the north shore of Molokai. It is best know as the site of a leper colony. (Hansen’s disease). It proved to be a good site for the Hawaii government of the 1800’s as a place to “settle” people with the affliction, due to the remoteness. The only access is down a steep trail via mules, or by airplane.

Today Hansen’s disease is treatable. There are several residents who still live there, mostly in their 70’s and they can remain there until their death.

The only way to visit is with the official Damien Tours, I loved the bus. A barge comes once a year to supply the Peninsula.

Abandoned Wind Farm: South Point, The Big Island

On the road to the southern most point of Hawaii is the abandoned Kamaoa Wind Farm. Most of the towers are still standing and rusting. Many of the blades are missing; some of the remaining ones try to turn. The winds off the south shore are very strong and the blades make various noises. It is an eerie place.

Flying the Hawaiian Islands

Christmas in Hawaii. Susan and I rented a C-182 out of the Kona Airport and flew across the channel to the south shore of Maui, then along the sea cliffs of Molokai. After crossing Molokai, we flew across shipwreck beach on Lanai, over Kahoolawe, and back to Kona. Just a few of the pictures.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

I was asked to be a Lifeline on the TV show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. While I didn't get the Phone A Friend call, I did get my picture on the air. I needed to fill out a talent release. Having the tables turned on me was interesting. I love the part that states "throughout the universe in perpetuity". I thought the lawyer was remiss by not asking for all rights in "alternate and parallel universes" as well.

Northern Wisconsin Flying

Three friends and I took the weekend to fly around Northern Wisconsin in the Super Cubs. It was a very windy, cold day for October. We spent Saturday night at my place and grilled a nice rib dinner. We made the splash page of SuperCub.org, the official web page of record for the SuperCub enthusiasts.

Instrument Rating

Ski Flying

The weather has been poor for flying the last week. Susan and I woke up this morning and we saw blue skies. I emailed John Breitinger to see if he was up for some ski landings. He was out of town, but suggested that Chris Napier would love to come to Lakewood Lodge for a ski landing, pick me up and fly me back to MIC so I could pick up the Cub. It worked out perfectly. A great day for Minnesota/Wisconsin Winter Flying, other than the headwind into Crystal. The trip back gave me a nice 108K ground speed. I'll take that for a Supercub with skis and a Borer prop.

Sundogs and NightHawks

We are on vacation! Tonight we enjoyed a glass of wine on the pontoon boat. As we came back to the dock we saw a flock of about 200 NightHawks circling over the south shore of Slim Lake. The top picture is of a sundog; the black spots are the birds and the bottom picture is a close up of a NightHawk.

Washburn County-Late Summer Beautiful Day

A very nice day in Washburn County. We landed the Cub last night at Lakewood Lodge and enjoyed a sunset on Loyhead Lake with Bob Gillette. Today was a "Pool Day". We did nothing but enjoy the day.

Slim Lake Summer Night

Price County Fly In

In July, several airplanes from the Birchwood area flew to the Price County Airport for the annual fly in. Free breakfast for pilots!

Most Southern Point of the US

This is the most southern point of the United States on the Island of Hawaii. Local fishermen use this structure to launch their boats to the water below. The wind blows almost constantly. Many of the trees in the area grow bent over due to the nearly constant winds.

Shangri La

Shangri La is the Honolulu home of Doris Duke. During her life she acquired a vast collection of Islamic art. We visited her home and gardens during our visit to Hawaii.

Gillmore Lake, Minog, WI

I flew to Warner Lake to visit a photo stylist, Marin Anderson, in Burnett County near Hertle WI. Then onto to Gillmore Lake to visit John Breitinger his wife Jen and daughter Eva at their cabin near Minong, WI. We had two back-to-back snowstorms. There was 10 inches of powder snow on the lakes in the area. It warmed up to around 30F and the skis iced in on Gillmore Lake. I cycled the skis a few times, pulled a rope under the skis to remove the ice and John shook the tail to break the skis out of the ice. The snow was light and the prop pushed up a lot of snow. Stopped by Slim Lake to pick up a few items for our trip to Hawaii.

Log Cabin Ski Fly-In

Pilots from Birchwood and the Crystal Airport flew to the Log Cabin Airport near Mondovi Wisconsin on Sunday. Doug Ward and Julie Ohm were the hosts at their beautiful airport. Doug is a WWII vet. He was a ball turret gunner in B-29's. He has lots of great stories. He also rebuilds J-3 Cubs at his private strip.
